1. Villain capable of folding
THE absolute criterion. A triple barrel against a calling station = guaranteed loss. Look for:
- Fold to River Bet >45% on HUD
- Low WTSD% (Went To Showdown) (<27%)
- Tight-passive profile who pays flop-turn "on principle" but folds river

2. Hand with blockers + zero showdown value
Ideal triple barrel hands:
- Missed flush draws with blocker to villain's flush: you block their nuts
- Missed straight draws with blocker to straight: same
- Ax with low Ace on boards where Ace blocks villain's top range
To avoid: bottom pair, middle pair, suited connectors with low pair — these are bluff catchers, not bluffs.
3. Run-out completing YOUR narrative
The river must validate your story. If you c-bet flop and turn representing top pair or set, and the river brings an Ace or a card completing a flush YOUR range has, your narrative holds.
Bad run-out: flop A-K-2, turn 7, river 2. River pairs the board but doesn't change dynamics. Your triple barrel has no story.
Good run-out: flop K-7-2 monotone diamonds, turn 5 brick, river A diamond. Your diamonds credibly represent the flush.
4. Coherent increasing sizing

Setup:
- Open 2.5bb, BB call → pot 5bb
- Flop K-7-2hh, c-bet 3bb, BB call → pot 11bb
- Turn 4s, bet 7bb, BB call → pot 25bb
- River As, bet 18bb (75% pot)
You risk 18bb to win 25bb. Required fold equity = 18 / (18 + 25) = 42%.

Combo draws: the best triple barrel candidates
Combo draws (two draws simultaneously, e.g.: straight draw + flush draw) are dream triple barrels:
- Flop: bet for fold equity + protection of your equity (35%+ vs top pair)
- Turn: if draw still misses, continue betting — equity reduced but fold equity increased
- River: if nothing hits, you arrive with air... BUT your story is coherent, and your blockers are numerous
Example: J♥T♥ on K♥7♥2♣. You have flush draw + gutshot. If river is 8♠ (nothing hits), you have:
- 2 blockers to villain's flush (J♥, T♥)
- 1 blocker to Q-J-T-9-8 straight (J and T)
- Zero showdown value

When to abandon the bluff
Not all triple barrels should complete. Know how to break the sequence when:
- Villain raises one of your barrels: strength signal, abandon
- Run-out doesn't validate your narrative: brick river after two barrels = check or small bet
- Villain pot odds become too good: small river bet = villain calls anything
- You have more equity than thought: middle pair "by accident" = check-call or check for value
Common triple barrel mistakes
1. Triple barrel out of pride. You bet flop and turn, you "must" bet river. No — each street is an independent decision.
2. Hands without blockers. Triple barrel with 76o on K-T-2-A-3? You're blind bluffing. Blockers maximize fold equity.
3. Identical sizing each street. Bet flop 50% / turn 50% / river 50% = weak signal. Increase pressure.
4. Triple barrel against wrong profile. Calling station calls to showdown with second pair. Triple barrel = burning chips.
5. No turn/river plan from the flop. Triple barrel is planned on the flop. If you improvise, you make bad decisions.
How to defend against a triple barrel
Facing villain's triple barrel, ask:
- Does the run-out help their range? If yes, fold wider.
- Is the sizing polarized? Increasing sizing = polarization. Your bluff catchers lose value.
